'No, no,' was the prisoner's eager reply. ' Believe me I am not.'

-- Нет, нет, -- живо ответил арестант, -- поверь мне, я не врач.

'Very well, if you wish to keep it a secret, do so. It has no direct bearing on the case.

-- Ну, хорошо. Если хочешь это держать в тайне, держи. К делу это прямого отношения не имеет.

So you maintain that you never incited people to tear down ... or burn, or by any means destroy the temple?'

Так ты утверждаешь, что не призывал разрушить... или поджечь, или каким-либо иным способом уничтожить храм?

'I repeat, hegemon, that I have never tried to persuade anyone to attempt any such thing. Do I look weak in the head? '

-- Я, игемон, никого не призывал к подобным действиям, повторяю. Разве я похож на слабоумного?

'Oh no, you do not,' replied the Procurator quietly, and smiled an ominous smile.

-- О да, ты не похож на слабоумного, -- тихо ответил прокуратор и улыбнулся какой-то страшной улыбкой,

' Very well, swear that it is not so.'

-- так поклянись, что этого не было.

'What would you have me swear by? ' enquired the unbound prisoner with great urgency.

-- Чем хочешь ты, чтобы я поклялся? -- спросил, очень оживившись, развязанный.

'Well, by your life,' replied the Procurator. ' It is high time to swear by it because you should know that it is hanging by a thread.'

-- Ну, хотя бы жизнью твоею, -- ответил прокуратор, -- ею клясться самое время, так как она висит на волоске, знай это!

'You do not believe, do you, hegemon, that it is you who have strung it up?' asked the prisoner. ' If you do you are mistaken.'

-- Не думаешь ли ты, что ты ее подвесил, игемон? -- спросил арестант, -- если это так, ты очень ошибаешься.

Pilate shuddered and answered through clenched teeth : 'I can cut that thread.'

Пилат вздрогнул и ответил сквозь зубы: -- Я могу перерезать этот волосок.

'You are mistaken there too,' objected the prisoner, beaming and shading himself from the sun with his hand.

-- И в этом ты ошибаешься, -- светло улыбаясь и заслоняясь рукой от солнца, возразил арестант,

' You must agree, I think, that the thread can only be cut by the one who has suspended it? '

-- согласись, что перерезать волосок уж наверно может лишь тот, кто подвесил?

'Yes, yes,' said Pilate, smiling. ' I now have no doubt that the idle gapers of Jerusalem have been pursuing you.

-- Так, так, -- улыбнувшись, сказал Пилат, -- теперь я не сомневаюсь в том, что праздные зеваки в Ершалаиме ходили за тобою по пятам.

I do not know who strung up your tongue, but he strung it well.

Не знаю, кто подвесил твой язык, но подвешен он хорошо.

By the way. Tell me, is it true that you entered Jerusalem by the Susim Gate mounted on a donkey, accompanied by a rabble who greeted you as though you were a prophet? '

Кстати, скажи: верно ли, что ты явился в Ершалаим через Сузские ворота верхом на осле, сопровождаемый толпою черни, кричавшей тебе приветствия как бы некоему пророку?

Here the Procurator pointed to a scroll of parchment.

-- тут прокуратор указал на свиток пергамента.

The prisoner stared dubiously at the Procurator. 'I have no donkey, hegemon,' he said.

Арестант недоуменно поглядел на прокуратора. -- У меня и осла-то никакого нет, игемон, -- сказал он.

' I certainly came into Jerusalem through the Susim Gate, but I came on foot alone except for Matthew the Levite and nobody shouted a word to me as no one in Jerusalem knew me then.'

-- Пришел я в Ершалаим точно через Сузские ворота, но пешком, в сопровождении одного Левия Матвея, и никто мне ничего не кричал, так как никто меня тогда в Ершалаиме не знал.

'Do you happen to know,' went on Pilate without taking his eyes off the prisoner, ' anyone called Dismas? Or Hestas? Or a third--Bar-Abba? '

-- Не знаешь ли ты таких, -- продолжал Пилат, не сводя глаз с арестанта, -- некоего Дисмаса, другого -- Гестаса и третьего -- Вар-раввана?

'I do not know these good men,' replied the prisoner.

-- Этих добрых людей я не знаю, -- ответил арестант.

'Is that the truth? '

-- Правда?

'It is.'

-- Правда.

'And now tell me why you always use that expression " good men "? Is that what you call everybody? '

-- А теперь скажи мне, что это ты все время употребляешь слова "добрые люди"? Ты всех, что ли, так называешь?

'Yes, everybody,' answered the prisoner. ' There are no evil people on earth.'

-- Всех, -- ответил арестант, -- злых людей нет на свете.

'That is news to me,' said Pilate with a laugh. ' But perhaps I am too ignorant of life.

-- Впервые слышу об этом, -- сказал Пилат, усмехнувшись, -- но, может быть, я мало знаю жизнь!

You need take no further notes,' he said to the secretary, although the man had taken none for some time.

Можете дальнейшее не записывать, -- обратился он к секретарю, хотя тот и так ничего не записывал,

Pilate turned back to the prisoner : 'Did you read about that in some Greek book? '

и продолжал говорить арестанту: -- В какой-нибудь из греческих книг ты прочел об этом?

'No, I reached that conclusion in my own mind.'

-- Нет, я своим умом дошел до этого.

'And is that what you preach? '

-- И ты проповедуешь это?

' Yes.'

-- Да.

'Centurion Mark Muribellum, for instance--is he good? '

-- А вот, например, кентурион Марк, его прозвали Крысобоем, -- он -- добрый?

'Yes,' replied the prisoner. ' He is, it is true, an unhappy man. Since the good people disfigured him he has become harsh and callous. It would be interesting to know who mutilated him.'

-- Да, -- ответил арестант, -- он, правда, несчастливый человек. С тех пор как добрые люди изуродовали его, он стал жесток и черств. Интересно бы знать, кто его искалечил.

'That I will gladly tell you,' rejoined Pilate, ' because I was a witness to it.

-- Охотно могу сообщить это, -- отозвался Пилат, -- ибо я был свидетелем этого.

These good men threw themselves at him like dogs at a bear. The Germans clung to his neck, his arms, his legs.

Добрые люди бросались на него, как собаки на медведя. Германцы вцепились ему в шею, в руки, в ноги.

An infantry maniple had been ambushed and had it not been for a troop of cavalry breaking through from the flank--a troop commanded by me--you, philosopher, would not have been talking to Muribellum just now.

Пехотный манипул попал в мешок, и если бы не врубилась с фланга кавалерийская турма, а командовал ею я, -- тебе, философ, не пришлось бы разговаривать с Крысобоем.

It happened at the battle of Idistavizo in the Valley of the Virgins.'

Это было в бою при Идиставизо, в долине Дев.

'If I were to talk to him,' the prisoner suddenly said in a reflective voice, ' I am sure that he would change greatly.'

-- Если бы с ним поговорить, -- вдруг мечтательно сказал арестант, -- я уверен, что он резко изменился бы.

'I suspect,' said Pilate, ' that the Legate of the Legion would not be best pleased if you took it into your head to talk to one of his officers or soldiers.

-- Я полагаю, -- отозвался Пилат, -- что мало радости ты доставил бы легату легиона, если бы вздумал разговаривать с кем-нибудь из его офицеров или солдат.

Fortunately for us all any such thing is forbidden and the first person to ensure that it cannot occur would be myself.'

Впрочем, этого и не случится, к общему счастью, и первый, кто об этом позаботится, буду я.

At that moment a swallow darted into the arcade, circled under the gilded ceiling, flew lower, almost brushed its pointed wingtip over the face of a bronze statue in a niche and disappeared behind the capital of a column,

В это время в колоннаду стремительно влетела ласточка, сделала под золотым потолком круг, снизилась, чуть не задела острым крылом лица медной статуи в нише и скрылась за капителью колонны.

perhaps with the thought of nesting there.

Быть может, ей пришла мысль вить там гнездо.

As it flew an idea formed itself in the Procurator's mind, which was now bright and clear.

В течение ее полета в светлой теперь и легкой голове прокуратора сложилась формула.

It was thus : the hegemon had examined the case of the vagrant philosopher Yeshua, surnamed Ha-Notsri, and could not substantiate the criminal charge made against him.

Она была такова: игемон разобрал дело бродячего философа Иешуа по кличке Га-Ноцри, и состава преступления в нем не нашел.

In particular he could not find the slightest connection between Yeshua's actions and the recent disorders in Jerusalem.

В частности, не нашел ни малейшей связи между действиями Иешуа и беспорядками, происшедшими в Ершалаиме недавно.

The vagrant philosopher was mentally ill, as a result of which the sentence of death pronounced on Ha-Notsri by the Lesser Sanhedrin would not be confirmed.

Бродячий философ оказался душевнобольным. Вследствие этого смертный приговор Га-Ноцри, вынесенный Малым Синедрионом, прокуратор не утверждает.

But in view of the danger of unrest liable to be caused by Yeshua's mad, Utopian preaching, the Procurator would remove the man from Jerusalem and sentence him to imprisonment in Caesarea Stratonova on the Mediterranean--the place of the Procurator's own residence.

Но ввиду того, что безумные, утопические речи Га-Ноцри могут быть причиною волнений в Ершалаиме, прокуратор удаляет Иешуа из Ершалаима и подвергает его заключению в Кесарии Стратоновой на Средиземном море, то есть именно там, где резиденция прокуратора.

It only remained to dictate this to the secretary.

Оставалось это продиктовать секретарю.

The swallow's wings fluttered over the hegemon's head, the bird flew towards the fountain and out into freedom.

Крылья ласточки фыркнули над самой головой игемона, птица метнулась к чаше фонтана и вылетела на волю.

The Procurator raised his eyes to the prisoner and saw that a column of dust had swirled up beside him.

Прокуратор поднял глаза на арестанта и увидел, что возле того столбом загорелась пыль.

'Is that all there is on this man? ' Pilate asked the secretary.

-- Все о нем? -- спросил Пилат у секретаря.

'No, unfortunately,' replied the secretary unexpectedly, and handed Pilate another parchment.

-- Нет, к сожалению, -- неожиданно ответил секретарь и подал Пилату другой кусок пергамента.

'What else is there? ' enquired Pilate and frowned. Having read the further evidence a change came over his expression.

-- Что еще там? -- спросил Пилат и нахмурился. Прочитав поданное, он еще более изменился в лице.

Whether it was blood flowing back into his neck and face or from something else that occurred, his skin changed from yellow to red-brown and his eyes appeared to collapse.

Темная ли кровь прилила к шее и лицу или случилось что-либо другое, но только кожа его утратила желтизну, побурела, а глаза как будто провалились.

Probably caused by the increased blood-pressure in his temples, something happened to the Procurator's sight.

Опять-таки виновата была, вероятно, кровь, прилившая к вискам и застучавшая в них, только у прокуратора что-то случилось со зрением.

He seemed to see the prisoner's head vanish and another appear in its place,

Так, померещилось ему, что голова арестанта уплыла куда-то, а вместо нее появилась другая.

bald and crowned with a spiked golden diadem. The skin of the forehead was split by a round, livid scar smeared with ointment.

На этой плешивой голове сидел редкозубый золотой венец; на лбу была круглая язва, разъедающая кожу и смазанная мазью;

A sunken, toothless mouth with a capricious, pendulous lower lip.

запавший беззубый рот с отвисшей нижней капризною губой.

Pilate had the sensation that the pink columns of his balcony and the roofscape of Jerusalem below and beyond the garden had all vanished, drowned in the thick foliage of cypress groves.

Пилату показалось, что исчезли розовые колонны балкона и кровли Ершалаима вдали, внизу за садом, и все утонуло вокруг в густейшей зелени Капрейских садов.

His hearing, too, was strangely affected--there was a sound as of distant trumpets, muted and threatening, and a nasal voice could clearly be heard arrogantly intoning the words: ' The law pertaining to high treason . . .'

И со слухом совершилось что-то странное, как будто вдали проиграли негромко и грозно трубы и очень явственно послышался носовой голос, надменно тянущий слова: "Закон об оскорблении величества..."

Strange, rapid, disconnected thoughts passed through his mind.

Мысли понеслись короткие, бессвязные и необыкновенные:

' Dead! ' Then : ' They have killed him! . . .' And an absurd notion about immortality, the thought of which aroused a sense of unbearable grief.

"Погиб!", потом: "Погибли!.." И какая-то совсем нелепая среди них о каком-то долженствующем непременно быть -- и с кем?! -- бессмертии, причем бессмертие почему-то вызывало нестерпимую тоску.

Pilate straightened up, banished the vision, turned his gaze back to the balcony and again the prisoner's eyes met his.

Пилат напрягся, изгнал видение, вернулся взором на балкон, и опять перед ним оказались глаза арестанта.

'Listen, Ha-Notsri,' began the Procurator, giving Yeshua a strange look. His expression was grim but his eyes betrayed anxiety.

-- Слушай, Га-Ноцри, -- заговорил прокуратор, глядя на Иешуа как-то странно: лицо прокуратора было грозно, но глаза тревожны,

' Have you ever said anything about great Caesar? Answer! Did you say anything of the sort? Or did you . . . not? '

-- ты когда-либо говорил что-нибудь о великом кесаре? Отвечай! Говорил?.. Или... не... говорил?

Pilate gave the word 'not' more emphasis than was proper in a court of law and his look seemed to be trying to project a particular thought into the prisoner's mind.

Пилат протянул слово "не" несколько больше, чем это полагается на суде, и послал Иешуа в своем взгляде какую-то мысль, которую как бы хотел внушить арестанту.

' Telling the truth is easy and pleasant,' remarked the prisoner.

-- Правду говорить легко и приятно, -- заметил арестант.

'I do not want to know,' replied Pilate in a voice of suppressed anger, ' whether you enjoy telling the truth or not.

-- Мне не нужно знать, -- придушенным, злым голосом отозвался Пилат, -- приятно или неприятно тебе говорить правду.

You are obliged to tell me the truth. But when you speak weigh every word, if you wish to avoid a painful death.'

Но тебе придется ее говорить. Но, говоря, взвешивай каждое слово, если не хочешь не только неизбежной, но и мучительной смерти.

No one knows what passed through the mind of the Procurator of Judaea, but he permitted himself to raise his hand as though shading himself from a ray of sunlight and, shielded by that hand, to throw the prisoner a glance that conveyed a hint.

Никто не знает, что случилось с прокуратором Иудеи, но он позволил себе поднять руку, как бы заслоняясь от солнечного луча, и за этой рукой, как за щитом, послать арестанту какой-то намекающий взор.

'So,' he said, ' answer this question : do you know a certain Judas of Karioth and if you have ever spoken to him what did you say to him about Caesar? '

-- Итак, -- говорил он, -- отвечай, знаешь ли ты некоего Иуду из Кириафа, и что именно ты говорил ему, если говорил, о кесаре?

'It happened thus,' began the prisoner readily. ' The day before yesterday, in the evening, I met a young man near the temple who called himself Judas, from the town of Karioth.

-- Дело было так, -- охотно начал рассказывать арестант, -- позавчера вечером я познакомился возле храма с одним молодым человеком, который назвал себя Иудой из города Кириафа.

He invited me to his home in the Lower City and gave me supper...'

--Он пригласил меня к себе в дом в Нижнем Городе и угостил...--

'Is he a good man? ' asked Pilate, a diabolical glitter in his eyes.

-- Добрый человек? -- спросил Пилат, и дьявольский огонь сверкнул в его глазах.

'A very good man and eager to learn,' affirmed the prisoner.

-- Очень добрый и любознательный человек, -- подтвердил арестант,

' He expressed the greatest interest in my ideas and welcomed me joyfully .. . '

-- он высказал величайший интерес к моим мыслям, принял меня весьма радушно...

'Lit the candles. . . .' said Pilate through clenched teeth to the prisoner, his eyes glittering.

-- Светильники зажег... -- сквозь зубы в тон арестанту проговорил Пилат, и глаза его при этом мерцали.

'Yes,' said Yeshua, slightly astonished that the Procurator should be so well informed, and went on :

-- Да, -- немного удивившись осведомленности прокуратора, продолжал Иешуа,

' He asked me for my views on the government. The question interested him very much.'

-- попросил меня высказать свой взгляд на государственную власть. Его этот вопрос чрезвычайно интересовал.

'And so what did you say? ' asked Pilate. ' Or are you going to reply that you have forgotten what you said? ' But there was already a note of hopelessness in Pilate's voice.

-- И что же ты сказал? -- спросил Пилат, -- или ты ответишь, что ты забыл, что говорил? -- но в тоне Пилата была уже безнадежность.

'Among other things I said,' continued the prisoner, ' that all power is a form of violence exercised over people and that the time will come when there will be no rule by Caesar nor any other form of rule.

-- В числе прочего я говорил, -- рассказывал арестант, -- что всякая власть является насилием над людьми и что настанет время, когда не будет власти ни кесарей, ни какой-либо иной власти.

Man will pass into the kingdom of truth and justice where no sort of power will be needed.'

Человек перейдет в царство истины и справедливости, где вообще не будет надобна никакая власть.

'Go on!'

-- Далее!

'There is no more to tell,' said the prisoner. ' After that some men came running in, tied me up and took me to prison.'

-- Далее ничего не было, -- сказал арестант, -- тут вбежали люди, стали меня вязать и повели в тюрьму.

The secretary, straining not to miss a word, rapidly scribbled the statement on his parchment.

Секретарь, стараясь не проронить ни слова, быстро чертил на пергаменте слова.

'There never has been, nor yet shall be a greater and more perfect government in this world than the rule of the emperor Tiberius!' Pilate's voice rang out harshly and painfully.

-- На свете не было, нет и не будет никогда более великой и прекрасной для людей власти, чем власть императора Тиверия! -- сорванный и больной голос Пилата разросся.

The Procurator stared at his secretary and at the bodyguard with what seemed like hatred.

Прокуратор с ненавистью почему-то глядел на секретаря и конвой.

' And what business have you, a criminal lunatic, to discuss such matters! ' Pilate shouted. ' Remove the guards from the balcony! '

-- И не тебе, безумный преступник, рассуждать о ней! -- тут Пилат вскричал: -- Вывести конвой с балкона!

And turning to his secretary he added: ' Leave me alone with this criminal. This is a case of treason.'

-- и, повернувшись к секретарю, добавил: -- Оставьте меня с преступником наедине, здесь государственное дело.

The bodyguard raised their lances and with the measured tread of their iron-shod caligae marched from the balcony towards the garden followed by the secretary.

Конвой поднял копья и, мерно стуча подкованными калигами, вышел с балкона в сад, а за конвоем вышел и секретарь.
