`Curiouser and curiouser!' cried Alice
- Все страньше и страньше! — вскричала Алиса.
(she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English);

`now I'm opening out like the largest telescope that ever was!
- Я теперь раздвигаюсь, словно подзорная труба.
Good-bye, feet!'
Прощайте ноги.
(for when she looked down at her feet, they seemed to be almost out of sight, they were getting so far off).
(В эту минуту она как раз взглянула на ноги и увидела, как стремительно они уносятся вниз. Еще мгновение -- они скроются из виду).
`Oh, my poor little feet,
- Бедные мои ножки!
I wonder who will put on your shoes and stockings for you now, dears?
Кто же вас будет теперь обувать? Кто натянет на вас чулки и башмаки?
I'm sure _I_ shan't be able! I shall be a great deal too far off to trouble myself about you:
Мне же до вас теперь, мои милые, не достать. Мы будем так далеки друг от друга, что мне будет совсем не до вас...
you must manage the best way you can;

-but I must be kind to them,' thought Alice, `or perhaps they won't walk the way I want to go!
Тут она призадумалась. — Все-таки надо быть с ними поласковее, — сказала она про себя. — А то еще возьмут и пойдут не в ту сторону.
Let me see: I'll give them a new pair of boots every Christmas.'
Ну, ладно! На рождество буду посылать им в подарок новые ботинки.
And she went on planning to herself how she would manage it.
И она принялась строить планы.
`They must go by the carrier,' she thought; `and how funny it'll seem,
- Придется отправлять их с посыльным, — думала она. — Вот будет смешно!
sending presents to one's own feet!
Подарки собственным ногам!
And how odd the directions will look!

Oh dear, what nonsense I'm talking!'
- Ну что за вздор я несу!
Just then her head struck against the roof of the hall:
В эту минуту она ударилась головой о потолок:
in fact she was now more than nine feet high,

and she at once took up the little golden key and hurried off to the garden door.
Тогда она схватила со стола золотой ключик и побежала к двери в сад.
Poor Alice! It was as much as she could do, lying down on one side, to look through into the garden with one eye;
Бедная Алиса! Разве могла она теперь пройти в дверцу? Ей удалось лишь заглянуть в сад одним глазком -- и то для этого пришлось лечь на пол.
but to get through was more hopeless than ever:
Надежды на то, чтобы пройти в нору, не было никакой.
she sat down and began to cry again.
Она уселась на пол и снова расплакалась.
`You ought to be ashamed of yourself,' said Alice,
- Стыдись,-сказала себе Алиса немного спустя.
`a great girl like you,' (she might well say this), `to go on crying in this way! Stop this moment, I tell you!'
-Такая большая девочка (тут она, конечно, была права) — и плачешь! Сейчас же перестань, слышишь?
But she went on all the same, shedding gallons of tears, until there was a large pool all round her, about four inches deep and reaching half down the hall.
Но слезы лились ручьями, и вскоре вокруг нее образовалась большая лужа дюйма в четыре глубиной. Вода разлилась по полу и уже дошла до середины зала.
After a time she heard a little pattering of feet in the distance, and she hastily dried her eyes to see what was coming.

It was the White Rabbit returning, splendidly dressed, with a pair of white kid gloves in one hand and a large fan in the other:
Это возвращался Белый Кролик. Одет он был парадно, в одной руке держал пару лайковых перчаток, а в другой -- большой веер.
he came trotting along in a great hurry, muttering to himself as he came, `Oh! the Duchess, the Duchess! Oh! won't she be savage if I've kept her waiting!'
На бегу он тихо бормотал: -- Ах, боже мой, что скажет Герцогиня! Она будет в ярости, если я опоздаю! Просто в ярости!
Alice felt so desperate that she was ready to ask help of any one;
Алиса была в таком отчаянии, что готова была обратиться за помощью к кому угодно.
so, when the Rabbit came near her, she began, in a low, timid voice, `If you please, sir--'
Когда Кролик поравнялся с нею, она робко прошептала: -- Простите, сэр...
The Rabbit started violently, dropped the white kid gloves and the fan, and skurried away into the darkness as hard as he could go.
Кролик подпрыгнул, уронил перчатки и веер, метнулся прочь и тут же исчез в темноте.
Alice took up the fan and gloves,
Алиса подняла веер и перчатки.
and, as the hall was very hot, she kept fanning herself all the time she went on talking: `Dear, dear! How queer everything is to-day!
В зале было жарко, и она стала обмахиваться веером. -- Нет, вы только подумайте! -- говорила она. -- Какой сегодня день странный!
And yesterday things went on just as usual.
А вчера все шло, как обычно!
I wonder if I've been changed in the night?
Может, это я изменилась за ночь?
Let me think: was I the same when I got up this morning?
Дайте-ка вспомнить; сегодня утром, когда я встала, я это была или не я.
I almost think I can remember feeling a little different.
Кажется, уже не совсем я!
But if I'm not the same, the next question is, Who in the world am I? Ah, THAT'S the great puzzle!'
Но если это так, то кто же я в таком случае? это так сложно...
And she began thinking over all the children she knew that were of the same age as herself,
И она принялась перебирать в уме подружек, которые были с ней одного возраста.
to see if she could have been changed for any of them.

`I'm sure I'm not Ada,' she said, `for her hair goes in such long ringlets, and mine doesn't go in ringlets at all;

and I'm sure I can't be Mabel, for I know all sorts of things, and she, oh! she knows such a very little!

Besides, SHE'S she, and I'm I, and--oh dear, how puzzling it all is!
И вообще она это она, а я это я! Как все непонятно!
I'll try if I know all the things I used to know.

Let me see: four times five is twelve, and four times six is thirteen, and four times seven is--

oh dear! I shall never get to twenty at that rate!

However, the Multiplication Table doesn't signify: let's try Geography.
Ну, ладно, таблица умножения -- это неважно! Попробую географию!
London is the capital of Paris, and Paris is the capital of Rome, and Rome--no, THAT'S all wrong, I'm certain!
Лондон -- столица Парижа, а Париж -- столица Рима, а Рим... Нет, все не так, все неверно!
I must have been changed for Mabel!
Должно быть, я превратилась в Мейбл...
I'll try and say "How doth the little-- "'
Попробую прочитать ``Как дорожит...''
and she crossed her hands on her lap as if she were saying lessons, and began to repeat it,
Она сложила руки на коленях, словно отвечала урок, и начала.
but her voice sounded hoarse and strange, and the words did not come the same as they used to do:
Но голос ее зазвучал как-то странно, будто кто-то другой хрипло произносил за нее совсем другие слова:
- `How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!
`How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spread his claws,
And welcome little fishes in
With gently smiling jaws!'
Как дорожит своим хвостом
Малютка крокодил! --
Урчит и вьется над песком
Прилежно пенит Нил!
Как он умело шевелит
Опрятным коготком! --
Как рыбок он благодарит,
Глотая целиком!
`I'm sure those are not the right words,' said poor Alice,
- Слова совсем не те! — сказала бедная Алиса,
and her eyes filled with tears again as she went on,
и глаза у нее снова наполнились слезами.
`I must be Mabel after all, and I shall have to go and live in that poky little house,
- Значит, я все-таки Мейбл! Придется мне теперь жить в этом старом домишке.
and have next to no toys to play with, and oh!
И игрушек у меня совсем не будет!
ever so many lessons to learn!
Зато уроки надо будет учить без конца.
No, I've made up my mind about it; if I'm Mabel, I'll stay down here!
Ну что ж, решено: если я Мейбл, останусь здесь навсегда.
It'll be no use their putting their heads down and saying "Come up again, dear!"
Пусть тогда попробуют, придут сюда за мной! Свесят головы вниз, станут звать: ``Подымайся, милочка, к нам''.
I shall only look up and say "Who am I then? Tell me that first, and then, if I like being that person, I'll come up:
А я на них только посмотрю и отвечу: ``Скажите мне сначала, кто я! Если мне это понравится, я поднимусь,
if not, I'll stay down here till I'm somebody else"--but, oh dear!' cried Alice, with a sudden burst of tears,
а если нет -- останусь здесь, пока не превращусь в кого-нибудь другого!'' Тут слезы брызнули у нее из глаз.
`I do wish they WOULD put their heads down! I am so VERY tired of being all alone here!'
- Почему за мной никто не приходит? Как мне надоело сидеть здесь одной!
As she said this she looked down at her hands, and was surprised to see that she had put on one of the Rabbit's little white kid gloves while she was talking.
С этими словами Алиса глянула вниз и, к своему удивлению, заметила, что, пока говорила, натянула на одну руку крошечную перчатку Кролика.
`How CAN I have done that?' she thought.
- Как это мне удалось, — подумала Алиса.
`I must be growing small again.'
- Видно, я опять уменьшаюсь.
She got up and went to the table to measure herself by it,
Алиса встала и подошла к столику, чтобы выяснить, какого она теперь роста.
and found that, as nearly as she could guess, she was now about two feet high, and was going on shrinking rapidly:
Судя по всему, в ней было не больше двух футов, и она продолжала стремительно уменьшаться.
she soon found out that the cause of this was the fan she was holding, and she dropped it hastily,
Вскоре она поняла, что виной тому веер, который она держала в руках, и тут же швырнула его на пол.
just in time to avoid shrinking away altogether.
И хорошо сделала -- а то могла бы и вовсе исчезнуть!
`That WAS a narrow escape!' said Alice,
- Уф! Едва спаслась! — сказала Алиса,
a good deal frightened at the sudden change,
испуганная столь внезапной переменой,
but very glad to find herself still in existence;
но радуясь, что уцелела.
`and now for the garden!' and she ran with all speed back to the little door:
- А теперь — в сад! И она подбежала к дверце.
but, alas! the little door was shut again, and the little golden key was lying on the glass table as before,
Но увы! Дверца опять была заперта, а золотой ключик так и лежал на стеклянном столе.
`and things are worse than ever,' thought the poor child,
— Час от часу не легче! — подумала бедная Алиса.
`for I never was so small as this before, never! And I declare it's too bad, that it is!'
- Такой крошкой я еще не была ни разу! Плохо мое дело! Хуже некуда...
